History & History Related Items Plainfield history: The first settler in 1848 was William N. Kelly from New York State and thesite was called Norwich. Elija C. Waterman came the following year andlaid out a village. He offered free lots to settlers if they would build andlive on them. A grist mill, a saw mill, and a general store were soonadded. When the post office was established, Mr. Waterman was appointed as the first postmaster and officially changed the name to honor his earlierhome in Plainfield, Vermont.
