Return to Index History & History Related Items Prairie du Chien history: The first Europeans to the area were Marquette and Jolliet who came through on 17 June 1673. the name of Prairie du Chien came from the French for Prairie of the Dog, an early Fox chief who lived on the prairie. Early on, the area was kept as a rendezvous between the local Native Americans, the fur traders and okthers who would meet to exchange furs for other goods.
