Tomahawk was founded by William H. Bradley. Mr. Bradley was born in Bangor, Maine on 25 February 1838 and died in Milwaukee on 7 January 1902. He was a public-spirited man who willingly gave much good to the community.

The name of "Tomahawk" came from the local Indians who made this area their favorite hunting grounds. "Tomahawk" means "made by nature's own hands."

When incorporated in 1891, Tomahawk boasted 2,000 residents. At this time lumber was the largest aspect of the economy.
