History:
The county is named for Thomas Jefferson, third President of the United States.
The county was formed on 7 December 1836 from a portion of Milwaukee County. By 1838 Jefferson County was divided into four townships - Finch Precinct, Jefferson Precinct, Bark River and Watertown Precinct. The county seat was approved on 12 January 1838 as a site in the bend of the river below Jefferson. When the paperwork arrived there was a blank for the name, one of the commissioners, Capt. Robert Masters, filled it in with the name of Jefferson. The land was laid out into lots, some of which were sold to cover expenses. The county was finally fully organized in February 1839.
