History & History Related Items Anawalt history: Named in honor of Colonel Anawalt, who was manager of Union Supply Company, a subsidiary of the United States Steel Company. Anawalt was named Jeanette prior to being changed to Anawalt. After being named Anawalt there was a Bank called Anawalt Bank. It was closed and was turned into a beautiful home, which is still occupied in 2002. At one time there was an A&P grocery store, a dollar store, a liquor store, a movie theater, a barber shop and a Post Office. John Santy owned the theater. Mr Martin owned the Dollar Store. E.C. Rector owned a grocery store and clothing store. Barney Yates Owned A Grocery store also. There were two schools, one for blacks and one for whites. They went from the first grade to the ninth. After the ninth, you had to go to Gary schools. There were several churches, among them, Baptist, Methodist and Holiness. All the people mentioned here are deceased (2002) Return to Index
