Lewisburg is the county seat and one of the oldest towns in West Virginia. It was originally called Camp Union or Fort Savannah. It was re-named Lewisburg in honor of the pioneer Lewis family. It was established in 1782 with many of its old buildings included in a 236 acre National Register Historic District.
