Harman Blennerhassett settled here in 1798 and built a magnificent mansion and estate. After a military enterprise with Aaron Burr in 1806, he was imprisoned for his part in the deal. Though later released, he and Burr were never able to recover their former lives. The mansion burned to the ground in 1811, but archeologists discovered the foundation of the mansion and it has been re-created as best as could possibly have been done. Many items from history are on display in the museum. Other features on the island are a crafts village, shops, picnic shelters and bicycles. Hardwood forests, long beaches and open fields all help visitors to enjoy their time here.
