This area has been inhabited for many hundreds of years. Some archeologists have said that one of the oldest continually inhabited sites in North and South America is just outside of Charleston.
South Charleston was known as a "Belgian" town up until World War II, with many of the city residents being Belgian immigrants. These "Cinderheads of the Hills" came to South Charleston at the beginning of the twentieth century to start a glass-blowing factory. Many area residents still claim Belgian ancestry.
