History & History Related Items Weirton history: Weirton was founded in 1909 by Ernest T. Weir, founder of Weirton Steel Company. The city was named for this man. It was incorporated in 1947. Before incorporation, Weirton was made up of five communities--Hollidays Cove, Weircrest, Weirton Heights, Marland Heights, and downtown Weirton.
