Carbon County was founded on 16 Dec 1868 when it was carved from Laramie County in Dakota Territory. On 19 May 1869, the Wyoming Territory was organized and it became a county in thie territory on this date. The county was named for the abundance of coal deposits within its boundaries. In 1888, Natrona County was founded from Carbon County lands. By 1911, the boundaries were set.
