Olympic Gold for Rulon Gardner
For those of you who weren't aware, Rulon Gardner, a "local-boy" LDS
farmer from Afton, Wyoming had a wrestling match down in Sydney last night for
the heavyweight Olympic Wrestling Gold Medal. He was a student and did his
wrestling at Ricks College in Rexburg Idaho. He went up against the "undefeatable Aleksandr Karelin".
For those of you who aren't familiar with Karelin:
Aleksandr Karelin is the reigning Greco-Roman wrestling world champion, in the heavyweight division.
In his three Olympic medal attempts, Aleksandr Karelin has brought the gold medal to Russia three times.
Aleksandr Karelin has not lost a match in 12 years.
Aleksandr Karelin has not been scored upon since 1993.
Physically, Aleksandr Karelin is among the most intimidating sights in all of sports:
He stands 6'-4"
He weighs approximately 300 lbs
He "exudes pure strength."
Rulon Gardner was the extreme underdog in this match.
However, Rulon beat Aleksandr Karelin yesterday (final score: 1-0), and took home the gold for the United States!
