History & History Related Items Dayton history: Dayton was named for Joe Dayton Thorne, one of the founders of the community. It was named in 1882. Dayton is known for a couple of important firsts - Susan Wissler was elected the first female mayor in the state in 1911 and the first rodeo held in Wyoming in the early 1890's was held in Dayton.
