History & History Related Items

Green River was incorporated in 1868 before Wyoming was even a state. It was then located in the Dakota Territory. It was incorporated again in May, 1891 due to statehood. Green River began as a railroad town with the Union Pacific Railroad. It became a Divison Point on the railroad in 1872. In 1875, Green River became the county seat of Sweetwater County. A large depot was built with a shop and yard. The town was named for the Green River that goes through the city.

Mining became a prominent part of the local economy during the 1950's with a steadily increasing prominance.
