Riverton and the area has much history with famous people from the past, Chief Washakie, Jim Bridger and Sacajawea, having walked the area. The people of the area have always tried to blend the pioneer heritage with the native cultures, both Arapahoe and Shoshone Indians were in the area. Long standing industry has been farming and ranching. In 1950's uranium and mining became the major employer from the Gas Hills mining area about 50 miles southeast.
