History & History Related Items
Ten Sleep's name came from the fact that it was ten nights (sleeps) between the Great Sioux Camps and the Platte River to the south and the northern camp located near Bridger, Montana.
Many of the old battlefields in the Indian wars are in this area. Bates Battle site with the US soldiers and Shoshone against the Arapahoe is one of those sites. Another is the Dull Knife site. This battle, defeating Dull Knife and Wild Hog, gave the Big Horn Mountains to the white man. Not all the battles here were with the Indians. The old time feuds between the cattleman and the sheep herders had a famous battle called the Spring Creek Raid. This fight was over grazing rights.
