Antioch was founded in 1849 by two brothers, William and Joseph Smith. In the past, Antioch had coal mines and asparagus canneries. The first bridge to Sherman Island was built in 1926.

Antioch has many water-type activities including marinas, boatyards, yacht clubs and more. A public fishing pier is located in town with another near the Antioch Bridge. Among the annual activities in Antioch are the Rivertown Jamboree, July 4th fireworks and a lighted boat Christmas Parade.
