2000, 22 May
Leila Albrecht Payne, born Leila Alice Albrecht in Sherrill, Iowa, died peacefully in Lafayette, California on May 22, 2000 at age 83 years. Leila was the second of 3 children born to John and Alice Albrecht, and grew up as a farm girl in Sherrill. Her younger brother, Burton Albrecht, was a United States Naval Aviator, and a hero in World War II. Leila's sister, Lorraine Albrecht Wybenga, resides in Omaha, Nebraska. Leila graduated from Dubuque High School and then attended Arizona State College where she met her future husband Robert Payne. She raised 5 children with Robert in Phoenix, Arizona and was very active in service to her family and her community. A woman of solid character and "can do" mentality molded by her family and the farming community of Sherrill. Leila's life reflected the values she acquired growing up in Iowa.

Leila was preceded in death by her brother Commander Burton Albrecht, USN, and by her youngest daughter, Marjorie Payne. She is survived by her husband Robert Payne, her sister Lorraine Wybenga, children Judith Dueker, Mary Payne, Cathy Payne and Robert Payne, Jr., 8 grandchildren and many neices and nephews. Her family and many friends will miss her.
