History & History-related items
Here is a history page for the area.
After the Civil War, rich deposits of iron ore were found in the area and mined from around 1860 until 1900 when the mining became more industrial. The Santa Fe Railroad brought in a line to link with Port Bolivar in 1911 which connected Ore City with Longview. Ore City was officially platted about 1911. By 1914, there was much expansion with mills as well as a bank and several stores, a blacksmith shop and around 400 residents. After World War 1, no further work was done on the railroad and the line was finally abandoned in 1927. Even though the rail link was lost, Ore City survived. By 1936, its population was about 500. After World War II, the population declined to a low of 385 in 1952. By the mid-1960's there were over 800 residents. In 1990, Ore City had become the second largest city in Upshur County with a population of 898.
