History & History-related items
The area has always been a traditional fishing area. In fact, the name means fish hooking place. Excavations have uncovered artifacts that reveal use of the area as long ago as 10,000 B.C. More recently, the area supported nomadic tribes who moved along the river area depending on the season and the game available. In the late 1930s, a boat taking supplies to Salmon Village about 70 miles upriver had to stop here because of low water. There were a few houses and buildings here used for seasonal purposes. A school was built and soon, people began to settle around the school. By 1969 there were many homes, a store and other buildings.

Attractions
Chalkyitsik is reached mostly by air. There is a 3,000 foot gravel airstrip here. There are no roads to connect the villge with other nearby ones. There is, however, a winter trail to Fort Yukon. It is reached by small boats. Though most services are primitive, progress has been made to modernize the water treatment and sewage needs.
