Location

in the extreme southeast corner of Alabama, about 20 miles from Georgia and approximately five miles from Florida. Dothan, Alabama is 12 miles north and Panama City Beach, Florida is about 75 miles south. Other nearby communities include Madrid, Avon, Cowarts, Ashford and Rehobeth, all in Alabama and Campbellton, Malone and Jacob City all in Florida.

Cottonwood was incorporated in 1903. The origin of the town's name is unclear as there are conflicting stories. Some say it came from the Cottonwood trees that grew abundantly in the area while others claim that it is in honor of the Wood family that was influential in the settlement.

The Police Department is comprised of state certified officers. Cars are assigned to each officer. Each vehicle is equipped with an up to date video system, radar, and wireless mobile date units. All related items (firearms, body armor, etc.) are furnished by the Town.

Vol. Fire Chief: Louie Danford (2006)
The Volunteer Fire Department is comprised of Chief Danford and approxiamately 20 volunteer members. Apparatus includes 3 Class A pumpers, a 3.000 gallon tanker, a brush truck, and a Special Operations unit. The department is governed by the Houston County Volunteer Firefighter'sAssociation which oversees 17 rural Houston County fire departments.

The Cottonwood Volunteer Rescue Squad is staffed by State Certified members residing in the community. 2 fully equipped ambulances are available at all times.

Cottonwood Historical Events

1700's
The major road in the 18th century from St. Augustine to Pensacola, Florida probably passed through Cottonwood or perhaps Sealy Springs just to the south. It is believed that along this road was the Creek Indian village of "Pokanaweethly", some 8 miles due west of the springs.
