Five of the seven life zones in the Northern Hemisphere may be seen in the Canyon. The first known viewing of the Grand Canyon was in 1540 when a member of Coronado's expedition accidentally came upon it while looking for the lost cities of Cibola. Many years later, Major John Wesley Powell led an expedition to discover and explore the length of the canyon. They began from Green River, Wyoming in late May, 1869 and finally emerged from the western end of the canyon on Aug 30.
