Holbrook was founded in 1881 when the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad reached the area. The chief engineer of the project for the railroad was named Henry R. Holbrook. The town was named for him.

Holbrook is near the Petrified Forest National Park and the Meteor Crater. Holbrook is the county seat of Navajo County.
