John Wetherill established a trading post here in 1910. He first named it Oljeto, but later changed the name to Kayenta after a deep spring nearby. The town's economy was spurred on by rich uranium deposits here. It is only 22 to the Utah border and the gateway to the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park.
