Ground-breaking for Sun City took place in 1958 by developer, Del Webb. He envisioned a community especially for those over 55 where they could enjoy life in near perfect weather all year. Sun City was recognized for these things and more. It became extremely successful and was also a model for many other "retirement" communities around the country. Other communities, Sun City West and Sun City Grand have been developed near Sun City. Together, they are referred to as the "Sun Cities."
