Abel Stearns first came to the area around 1868 and sub-divided land here. Alonzo Cook purchased 160 acres in 1874 and is recognized as the founder of Garden Grove. He donated land for the schoolhouse and post office here. When he suggested the name of Garden Grove for the new community, some felt it didn’t really fit the local area. He countered that “We’ll make it appropriate by planting trees and making it beautiful.”

Garden Grove became a thriving farming community and for many years it remained mostly agricultural. After World War II, there was a building boom in the whole general area with Garden Grove becoming one of the fastest growing cities in the country during the 1950's.
