History & History Related Items Anaheim history: Anaheim began in 1857 as a colony of German farmers and vintners. George Hansen was the original surveyor of the 200 acres which are now the downtown area. Anaheim comes from a combination of "Ana", which is for the Santa Ana River and "heim", which is the German word for home. "Home by the river" is what the early pioneers called their city. The main crop in farming for the area was wine grapes. This was the case until the 1870's when a plant disease wiped out the vineyards. In their stead were planted acres of citrus trees, which grew successfully in Anaheim. The locals were dedicated farmers, but also gave their support to education and the arts. The first public buildings were a school and an opera house demonstrating their conviction toward the finer side of life. The incorporation of Anaheim came early on in 1876. The population was a small group of only 881. By 1920, there were 5,526 people living in the city. The Santa Fe railroad depot came to Anaheim in 1887, linking them with the east and improving the flow of their citrus crops. The city continued to grow slowly but surely. In the mid-50's, an event occurred that moved Anaheim along even more rapidly. 17 July 1955 was opening day for Disneyland. From then on, forward progress was rampant. Anaheim Stadium held its groundbreaking on 31 August 1964 with many more facilities coming with each year.
