When the University began to grow in the early 1960's, Isla Vista did the same, mainly to provide housing for the influx of new students. During the early 70's, the community was the place to be for protestors. The Isla Vista Riots took place on 25 February 1970 when the Bank of America building was burned. The many students are known for their liberal attitudes and fun-loving parties. As the community grew, problems also expanded with overcrowding, diversity and a lack of proper housing. In the year, 2000, the average age of a resident of Isla Vista was just 21.1 years, reflecting the large student population.
