Enos Hotchkiss was part of a road building party which found gold in "them thar hills" in 1874. The 1880's were successful years for the town as many businesses, churches and people came. Lake City did well until the price of silver plummeted. Lake City is based more on tourism in present times.

There are five mountain peaks over 14,000 in the nearby area - Uncompaghre, Wetterhorn, Sunshine, Handies and Redcloud. There are 26 peaks over 13,000 also in the area.
