The first cabin was built in October 1875 and just one year later, on 2 October 1876, Ouray was incorporated. When Ouray County was created from San Juan County in 1877, Ouray was named the county seat. The town grew to more than 2,600 residents by 1880. It quickly became the shipping point and trading center for the area and remained such for many years. The city was named after Chief Ouray of the Utes, a Native American tribe.
