Originally known as Saw Mill Range, the town existed to furnish lumber for England. It became known as a shipbuilding center by the 1770's. It was founded in 1680 and incorporated in 1807. A portion of the town is located in Sussex County with the other portion in Kent County.

Attractions
Milford is home to the Mispillion River Walk, a greenway space designed to preserve the town's waterfront. Milford is also home to Abbot's Mill Nature Center, which offers environmental education programs and outdoor activities.
