History & History Related Items

The Nanticoke Indians were the first inhabitants of the area. They still live in the area today. They number about 500 members. Millsboro was founded in 1860. The name comes from the large number of grist and saw mills which were in the area after the headwaters of the Indian River were dammed in 1792. There are many lakes and ponds in and around Millsboro. In fact, you could say it was surrounded by water with Millsboro Pond, Ingrams Pond and Betts Pond among them. The town was incorporated in 1893. It also includes the small communities of Gumboro, Oak Orchard and Long Neck.
