Settled in 1845, Brooksville was first known as Melendez. Later, it was merged with a neighboring community, Pierceville. It wasn't until 1856 that the town was finally named Brooksville to honor Preston Brooks. Brooks was a South Carolina Congressman who was a supporter of State Rights.
