Settlement of this area began in 1877, but it wasn't until June 22, 1898 that a post office was created at Deerfield, Florida with a population of just 20 settlers. The name was chosen because of the many deer that came to graze along the Hillsboro River. The area had originally been known as Hillsboro, taking that name from the Hillsboro River. Deerfield was incorporated as a town on June 11, 1925 with a population of about 1,300 people. The name was changed to the town of Deerfield Beach in 1939 when the population had reached 1,800. By 1951, much growth had occurred and the town became a city.
