The name was chosen because of the many deer that came to graze along the Hillsboro River. The area had originally been known as Hillsboro, taking that name from the Hillsboro River. Deerfield was incorporated as a town on June 11, 1925 with a population of about 1,300 people. The name was changed to the town of Deerfield Beach in 1939 when the population had reached 1,800.
