Gulfport was first known as Disston City. The city name was denied because another city in Hillsborough County had a similar name. It then became Bonifacio and later Veteran City. Finally, when it was incorporated in 1910, it was named Gulfport.

Gulfport's famous casino was built around 1900, but has been rebuilt three times. The current structure was built in 1935 and is used for social and community events, not for gambling as the name, "Casino," would appear to indicate.
