History & History Related Items La Crosse history: LaCrosse is known as the "Potato District" of Alachua County for its agriculture. It has been known for well over 100 years for its farms. Other crops grown in the area are vegetables and tobacco. Cattle are also raised here. LaCrosse has always been a small town out of the path of the railroad. How LaCrosse was named is not known, but some say it was for the game of LaCrosse and others say it was after the town of the same name in Wisconsin. Tourists enjoy driving through the area with its narrow country lanes and old quaint farmhouses.
