In 1954, ranch owner, Lee Ratner, changed his focus and turned his holdings into a residential development. He sold lots for homes to many people, including those in other parts of the world. Lehigh Acres could have been called a "company town" because of the control of the Lehigh Corporation. The company ended real estate activity in 2001. Lehigh Acres has not become a city, but there is interest by some for cityhood in the near future. For now, it remains an unincorporated area of Lee County. Its government is the Lee County Commission
