History & History Related Items
Of course, Native Americans have inhabited the area for thousands of years. In the early 1900's, the Everglades were being drained to make way for development. Not much development wsa created and a major hurricane destroyed whatever had been built. It wasn't until the mid 1940's that development began to creep in to the county. A homeowner's association was created in 1949 by Dr. Abram Hoffman. This was the beginning of government in the Plantation area. The city, itself, was created on 30 April 1953 when the fewer than 500 residents voted to incorporate. They wanted to preserve their community and keep surrounding cities from encroaching on their community. Much more information on the city's history may be found on this informative history page. Here is a great historical timeline for Plantation with all the important dates documented.
