A Prof. Bridges suggested the name for the ancient French city notes for its sugar refineries. A French engineer who worked at the sugar plantation also is thought to have suggested the name. The first residents came on 21 May 1909 after over 1,000 lots were sold for the new settlement. In only a year the population had increased to around 2,000 people.
