First known as Etowah, Canton was renamed Cherokee Courthouse once the building of the courthouse was completed. It wasn't long before silk production came into prominance and in 1834, the town was again renamed, this time for Canton, China, also known for its silk. Though the silk production project was later abandoned, the town retained the name of Canton.
