Return to Index History & History Related Items Greenville history: Greenville was named for General Nathaniel Greene, a commander during the Revolutionary War. The town was created at the time Meriwether County was created in 1828. It was established near the center of the county to become the county seat. The first lots were sold on 13 May 1828. The courthouse was built about 1903, but burned down in 1976. The original courthouse was destroyed by a tornado in 1893. Return to Index
