History & History Related Items East Harwich history: The Town of Harwich was settled about 1665 and later incorporated in 1694. Much of the history was centered around the sea and its related industries, but when oil was discovered and the whaling industry dropped off, cod fishing took its place. By the mid 1800s Harwich had 48 ships that were based here. Eventually, the fishing industry declined and other industries took its place such as cranberry bogs and tourism. Both industries remain important in the economy of the area today. East Harwich attractions: Cape Cod Rail Trail runs through the area.
