Burkittsville began as Harley’s Post Office in 1824 after one of two property owners, Major Joshua Harley. After Harley died in 1828, Henry Burkitt, the other property owner, renamed it Burkittsville. The town gradually added stores, a school, a tannery and other buildings.
During the Civil War, on 13 September 1862, there was a skirmish named the Battle of Crampton’s Gap. It is widely believed to have been the trigger to the Battle of Antietam which led, ultimately, to the Emancipation Declaration, a change in the war’s focus and the end of the conflict. Some of the buildings standing today, such as the Reformed and Lutheran churches and schoolhouse were hospitals for wounded on both sides of the war.

The Blair Witch Project
In 1999, the Blair Witch Project film was released. Burkittsville was the setting for the film even though most of the movie was filmed elsewhere. The legend and the location were completely fictional but that didn't stop fans from coming to see the town for themselves. People were found wandering the local woods looking for the places where the story happened. Nevertheless, the film did bring the town some notoriety.
