Return to Index History & History Related Items Burkittsville history: Burkittsville began as Harley’s Post Office in 1824 after one of two property owners, Major Joshua Harley. After Harley died in 1828, Henry Burkitt, the other property owner, renamed it Burkittsville. The town gradually added stores, a school, a tannery and other buildings. During the Civil War, on 13 September 1862, there was a skirmish named the Battle of Crampton’s Gap. It is widely believed to have been the trigger to the Battle of Antietam which led, ultimately, to the Emancipation Declaration, a change in the war’s focus and the end of the conflict.
