Frederick County was created from Baltimore and Prince George's Counties in 1748. It is most likely that it was named for Frederick Calvert (1731-1771) the sixth and last Lord Baltimore. He was the proprietor of Maryland from 1751 until he died in 1771. In 1776 the county was divided into three portions. The western portion became Washington County. The eastern section became Montgomery County and the central area remained as Frederick County. Carroll County was formed from a part of Frederick County and a part of Baltimore County in 1837.
