Mt Airy began around 1830 when Henry Bussard built the first house on Parr's Ridge. There was a railroad stop at Parr's Ridge for which the town became known. It was not officially named until a few years later. One of the railroad workers suggested the name after freezing his ears at work one day. The town's economy was supported by the milling, canning and sewing industries.
