Mt Airy began around 1830 when Henry Bussard built the first house on Parr's Ridge. There was a railroad stop at Parr's Ridge for which the town became known. It was not officially named until a few years later. One of the railroad workers suggested the name after freezing his ears at work one day. The town's economy was supported by the milling, canning and sewing industries.

Mount Airy is the only place in the state of Maryland where four counties come together. Frederick, Carroll, Howard, & Montgomery. In fact, Main Street is the Frederick County / Carroll County line. One side of the street is in Frederick County, the other side of the street is Carroll.
