History & History Related Items

Sykesville was built on a portion of the former Springfield Estate belonging to William Patterson. His son, George, sold land to James Sykes of Baltimore. He remodeled the local mill and built a five story hotel. As more people came, the town began to grow and was eventually named for Sykes. A devastating flood in 1868 washed out most of the town, but was rebuilt on the other side of the river. Sykesville was incorporated in 1904. Though hardhit in the Great Depression of the 1930's, World War II brought the town out of its slump and it began to grow again.
