History & History Related Items Columbia history: Columbia is a fairly new city. Its beginnings came in October of 1963 when the Rouse Company announced the acquisition of over 21 square miles on which they would build a new city. The city was planned from the very beginning to have the best of everything and would be available to all people. The planners met even before the city was begun to discuss and provide for all the objectives. The name was chosen because it already was on the roadmaps as Columbia Pike. The developer, James Rouse, felt it has a sort of "hallelujah sound." The planning stages were long lasted just over a year until November 1964. At this time, the new plan was presented to the county government and the residents of the area. A "New Town District" was granted and building commenced in January 1966. The first "settlers" moved here in 1967.
