The town was named for Princess Anne of Great Britain. She was the daughter of King George II. It was founded in 1733 and was an important center for the river trade soon after its founding. Much later, when the railroad was added to the area, it brought even more expansion of the community. There are many historic structures in town. The old town with about 300 buildings is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
