The first home was built in 1893 and before long more homes were built. The town, as promoted, was to be a place of “tranquility and refinement” but it had many problems some being no schools or fire protection. The residents petitioned the state to create a township so they could have taxes to support the citizens. The charter was approved in 1906 and took Somerset Heights and nearby areas and set up the town of Somerset.
