History & History Related Items Bethesda history: Bethesda is named for a local church, the Bethesda Presbyterian Church which was built in 1820. It was named for Jerusalem's Pool of Bethesda. It is one of the most affluent and educated areas of the entire country. The area is located on what was once an old Native American Trail. In the early 1800's, the trail was made into a toll road to transport crops such as tobacco between Georgetown and Frederick. In the early 1900's parts of the road were paved. When the area post office opened in 1871, the name of Bethesda was taken from the church and gradually the area adopted the name. Bethesda attractions: Bethesda Naval Hospital is located here. The President of the United States has his annual physical here. Many large companies, such as Lockheed Martin and Marriott International have their headquarters here.
