Two brothers, Edwin and Edward Baltzley, came here in 1889 and bought land along the Potomac River. They named their purchase Glen-Echo-on-the-Potomac. They had grand plans for the area, even putting stone castles there. In order to accommodate their hope for stone castles, they opened five stone quarries to provide the necessary stone. Though, over the years, the brothers faced numerous setbacks to their plans, they keep trying – regrouping after each adversity. One of the ideas was for an amusement park – Glen Echo Park – which opened in 1899. The park became extremely successful and drew many to the town. Though successful for many years, the park did close in 1968. The famous Dentzel carousel, which had come to the park in 1921, was sold when the park closed. However, the residents wanted it back and raised thousands of dollars for its purchase. It has been restored and, during the season, is open in the new Glen Echo Park.
